For nearly three decades, Big O’ Smokehouse has built a reputation for quality, hand-crafted, naturally hardwood-smoked seafood products. As the Caledonia, Michigan-based company continued to evolve its product packaging and expand its presence across retail and foodservice channels, it recognized an opportunity to strengthen how its products were presented to customers and buyers.
Updated packaging created an opportunity to improve product visibility, enhance the shopping experience, and better support retail partners and foodservice distributors. But it also introduced a broader marketing challenge: ensuring that the brand’s product imagery and sales materials accurately reflected the new packaging while maintaining a consistent, recognizable brand presence.
Big O’ needed more than updated product photos. It needed a cohesive, versatile library of imagery that could support sales efforts, meet foodservice e-commerce requirements, and elevate the brand across digital, print, and social media channels, all while creating a consistent visual foundation for future marketing initiatives.
Our approach began with understanding the Big O’ Smokehouse brand, its audiences, and the many ways product imagery supports its marketing and sales efforts. Rather than approaching the assignment as a one-time photography project, we focused on developing a cohesive visual strategy that would serve the brand across multiple channels and future initiatives.
We created a streamlined brand photography guide to establish consistency in styling, composition, backgrounds, and presentation. This framework ensured that every image would feel distinctly Big O’ while providing a repeatable approach for future product photography.
With both retail and foodservice audiences in mind, we developed a comprehensive shot list that balanced practical sales requirements with more engaging, brand-building imagery. Product and packaging photography was carefully planned to meet foodservice e-commerce specifications, while styled food photography highlighted the quality and appeal of Big O’s products.
Just as importantly, we planned each image for maximum versatility. Thoughtful composition and framing allow the photography to be adapted for sell sheets, websites, social media, digital advertising, and print materials.
The result is more than a collection of beautiful product images. It’s a flexible, consistent visual asset library designed to strengthen brand recognition, support sales opportunities, and deliver lasting value from a single photography investment.
